What Is Peripheral Vision?

Peripheral vision is the ability to see out of the corner of our eyes. It means that you can see things outside of your direct line of vision without turning your head. However, when there is a problem with our peripheral vision, it means that it takes more effort to see what is around us, this may result in tripping, falling or other accidents. Peripheral vision allows you to get a more complete view of the surroundings.

What Is Peripheral Vision Test?

A peripheral vision test is the part of the eye exam that tests the range of vision out of the corner of your eyes.

As part of a comprehensive eye exam or vision screening, eye doctors almost always includes a peripheral vision test. Your peripheral vision is the visual field at the outside of your vision. In other words, your eyes can focus on an object directly in front of you and you have the ability to see and recognize objects to your left, right, up and down.

In addition, peripheral vision loss can be a sign of a number of eye diseases, such as glaucoma and other optic nerve disorders. So, field of vision tests should be done regularly.

How Does a Peripheral Vision Test Work?

So, in this section, we will show you how a peripheral vision test works. A peripheral vision test takes little time and is usually incorporated into the early portion of the eye exam. One of the most common types of peripheral vision testing is confrontational peripheral vision testing, where your eye doctor asks you to focus on a target directly in front of you. With one eye covered, your focus trained on the target, you will be asked to describe things you see in the side field of your vision.

You need to focus on the main target and honestly describe what you see. Then cover the other eye and repeat the same procedures.

Besides the above one, there are other additional types of peripheral vision testing using automated machines with a series of blinking lights in the outer visual field or special cards with specific lines and patterns that create forced optical illusions. You can also test peripheral vision at home.
